Pitching and packing

It is amazing how much “stuff” you find in your home when you decide to move. We have decided to put our home on the market next week, we signed all the papers Sunday the date for the listing to begin is 04-05-06. Nick tells us that homes in our area are selling in about 55 days, we will test the theory. Back to the packing, We now have about 40 boxes packed in the basement and the house does look a lot less cluttered. When I pack this is the pattern, fill one or two boxes and fill one trash can, the trash men no longer like to come to our house. They tell us that they will start to dig the basement in 1-2 weeks, the story from the construction foreman is 5 months from the dig to move in, another theory to be tested. We are in the process of selecting all the stuff for the house siding color, shingle color, gutter color, trim color ceremaic tile color for each bathroom, foyer tile color, firepace tile color, counter top color for the kitchen…………………………. You get the picture. There are moments when I think you dumb ass why are you doing this to yourself. Time to go before I get caried away if I hven’t yet.
Will keep you all posted and post some photos of our dirt when I get a chance to figure that process out.

It is quite a process when you actually have to make all of those choices. I’m kind of glad that we ended up with a spec home because I’m sure my head would have exploded. Well good luck with the choices and I can’t wait to see some pictures.

Isn’t amazing how much stuff a person or family accumulates? Sometimes, moving is the only way to get rid of half of it. But then there is people like me that just keep moving the crap from one house to another.

We have collected a lot of stuff over the years, most of it has a memory or special quality to it that makes it hard to pitch, so on it goes to the next house. I get a little crazy when certain children of mine tell me to get rid of things that they made when they were kids for me or Len. “It won’t hurt my feelings if you want to get rid of that” however, the bottom line is that I treasure everything they made for us!
I have to admit that Len is doing a better job of giving away or pitching out stuff than I am, but then it is well known how much he hates to pack and unpack. We still argue about how much we are going to take (or NOT take) to Ludington when we go on vacation there each year. It’s become a ritual!
I would not have any issue with picking out all the color choices, etc. for the new house, if I felt I really had a choice. The builder pre-determines what he thinks you are going to like in certain standard packages and then you have to choose a package. Don’t like the package? Well, for an additional cost of ???? you can upgrade. The upgrades end up costing more than the base price of the house, I think! Although we knew this going in, it is amazing how much upgrading you end up doing! So much fun!!!

Sure moving helps you get rid of stuff. But we all tend to still keep too much. Marcia and I threw out a ton of stuff into the garbage when moved to our current location. Then we did it again when cleaning the room for Nigel. Yet we still have too much stuff!

I think the “stuff” is multiplying on its own. I don’t keep stuff that isn’t being used for very long, am ALWAYS

oops! (miner glitch!) to continue last comment, I’m ALWAYS giving away or throwing out stuff, yet there is always more to get rid of!! I don’t get it. Where is all this stuff coming from? Anyone who knows me well will understand why my goal is to one day be totally, I mean TOTALLY organized.
As for picking out all the items and colors for a new house, my first thought is how exciting to get to do that, then reality starts to sink in. With all those packages and upgrades and second guessing the choices made, I would probably have a nervous breakdown. I would probably drive the poor builders crazy with changes.
Good luck to you guys! Hope all goes smoothly with the building and the selling.

The hardest part with the new home choices is balancing the cost of an upgrade against our “do we really need this” and “but we really want it” thinking. Since this is most likely the last home Len and I will have, (unless John , Val & co. really convince us that North Carolina is the place we want to be), we are very much inclined to put in items that will help us as we age, such as door levers instead of round knobs (better for arthritic hands), or front loading, stackable washer and dryer on the main floor, pull out shelves in the kitchen and bathroom cabinets, etc. It is an interesting process!
